The world's strongest yoga ecosystems outside India
An honest, teacher-focused map of where yoga has grown into a living ecosystem (frequent teacher trainings, daily practice, and committed community) outside India. India remains the origin and, for many, the eventual destination; this covers everywhere else.
The standout ecosystems
- Bali: Ubud (the global wellness-yoga capital) and Canggu (surf, nomads, modern vinyasa).
- Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, Thailand: detox, tantra, ecstatic dance, and the disciplined Ashtanga campus at Samahita.
- Nosara, Costa Rica: the strongest teacher-training town in the Americas.
- Mazunte, Mexico and San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala: the depth picks, meditation-centric and low-commercial.
- Plus Sri Lanka, Portugal (Ericeira), the Philippines (Siargao), the Canary Islands, and Tulum (beautiful but heavily commercialized).
Seasonality
Bali peaks April to October. Thailand's Gulf coast, Costa Rica, Mexico and Guatemala are best roughly November to March. Sri Lanka's coasts reverse: south coast December to March, Arugam Bay on the east May to September.
